Cloud Radiative Heating Rate Forcing Using Profiles of Retrieved Arctic Cloud Microphysics

چکیده

Clouds and their radiative impacts are of primary importance to the Arctic climate and, therefore, global climate. Clouds dominate the radiation balance within the cold, dry Arctic atmosphere, and cloudradiation feedbacks are closely linked with the snow/ice-albedo feedback. Despite the importance of clouds in the Arctic, our current understanding of these clouds remains limited. Global climate models poorly predict fundamental quantities such as total cloudiness and surface temperature in the Arctic (Chen et al. 1995; Tao et al. 1996), which casts doubt on their ability to predict accurate radiation fields. Cloud observations with potential for improving Arctic models, have historically been restricted by the long Polar night, frequently occurring temperature inversions, and the highly reflective Arctic surface.

A line - by - line investigation of solar radiative effects in vertically inhomogeneous low clouds

SUMMARY Using a detailed line-by-line, multiple-scattering solar radiative-transfer model, the influences due to cloud internal inhomogeneity in the vertical upon the solar radiative transfer are investigated. In particular, the consequences due to non-uniform vertical profiles of liquid water and droplet sizes within low clouds are explored in a systematic manner. The fine structure of the spe...

A Simple, Yet Realistic Model for the Formation of Arctic Stratus Clouds–A Case Study

We have developed a one-dimensional radiative-convective model with detailed cloud microphysics, and used it to study the formation of Arctic Stratus clouds (ASC). The model contains detailed radiative and microphysical modules, and it provides a self-consistent treatment of the interaction between radiative and cloud microphysical processes important for cloud formation. The radiative transfer...

Evaluation of A New Mixed-Phase Cloud Microphysics Parameterization with the NCAR Climate Atmospheric Model (CAM3) and ARM Observations

Mixed-phase clouds are composed of a mixture of cloud droplets and ice crystals. The cloud microphysics in mixed-phase clouds can significantly impact cloud optical depth, cloud radiative forcing, and cloud coverage. However, the treatment of mixed-phase clouds in most current climate models is crude and the partitioning of condensed water into liquid droplets and ice crystals is prescribed as ...

A New Double-Moment Microphysics Parameterization for Application in Cloud and Climate Models. Part II: Single-Column Modeling of Arctic Clouds

The new double-moment microphysics scheme described in Part I of this paper is implemented into a single-column model to simulate clouds and radiation observed during the period 1 April–15 May 1998 of the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) and First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Regional Experiment–Arctic Clouds Experiment (FIRE–ACE) field projects. Mean predi...

Spectral Reflectance and Atmospheric Energetics in Cirrus-like Clouds. Part II: Applications of a Fourier Riccati Approach to Radiative Transfer

One of the major sources of uncertainty in climate studies is the detection of cirrus clouds and characterization of their radiative properties. Combinations of water vapor absorption channels (e.g., 1.38 mm), ice–water absorption channels (e.g., 1.64 mm), and atmospheric window channels (e.g., 11 mm) in the imager, together with a lidar profiler on future EOS platforms, will contribute to enha...
